Urgent Call to Colorado Hunters: The Dire Consequences of SB25-003, an Unprecedented Gun Ban

Attention, Colorado hunters! A storm is brewing over our cherished hunting traditions with the introduction of Colorado SB25-003, the states latest “assault weapons” semi-automatic firearm ban bill. This proposed legislation is a direct threat to our rights and way of life, aiming to ban the purchase, sale, transfer and manufacture of a broad range of semi-automatic firearms—including many that are staples in our hunting arsenals.

This isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s an attack on our heritage and our ability to sustain our families.

The legislation places a blanket ban on semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that accept detachable magazines, no exceptions (except for law enforcement). Additionally, the bill bans semi-automatic pistols that use gas to automatically reload after firing and can accept a detachable magazine.

This is more severe than state-level “assault weapons” bans we’ve seen in places like California, New Jersey and Massachusetts because the criteria written into those prohibitions require the firearm to also have specific cosmetic features, such as a pistol grip. SB25-003 does not include any such language; it is a broad stroke ban that will have massive implications on the Colorado hunting community.

If enacted, the Colorado Attorney General would have the power and authority to further define the language, which gets absurdly nuanced and contradictory around pistols.

The Real Impact on Our Hunting Gear

Let’s get straight to the point: SB25-003 wants to strip away our ability to use reliable, efficient semi-automatic shotguns, rifles, and pistols. These aren’t just guns; they are essential tools that are integral to various hunting activities across Colorado, from waterfowl to big game to predator control.

Among the firearms that would be banned are several that are staples in the Colorado hunting scene:

  • Browning A5: Renowned for its reliability and used widely for waterfowl hunting.
  • Benelli M4: A favorite for its ruggedness and performance in harsh conditions.
  • Remington Models 1187, 1100, and Versamax: Popular among bird hunters for their versatility and ease of use.
  • AR-15 and AR-10 Platforms: These rifles are used not only for sport shooting but also for hunting game such as deer and elk, due to their accuracy and modifiability. They are also a preferred platform for predator control on farms and ranches.
  • Ruger, Browning, S&W 22 Pistols, and 1911 platforms: Commonly used for small game and target shooting.

Are we expected to revert to outdated technology or spend money we don’t have on new equipment that might not do the job? This bill forces us to make choices that no hunter should ever have to consider, undermining our effectiveness and efficiency out in the field.

This Remington 7400 semi-auto rifle chambered in 30.06 that takes detachable magazines would be banned simply because it accepts that detachable magazine.

Economic and Subsistence Implications

Hunting is not merely a sport; it’s a vital source of sustenance for many families, especially in rural areas where the cost of living and groceries can be prohibitively high. By restricting access to the most effective hunting tools, SB25-003 could increase the difficulty and cost of obtaining meat through hunting, impacting food security for many families who rely on hunting to fill their freezers each season.

The Overlooked Role of Hunters in Conservation

Hunters are some of the most passionate conservationists, contributing significantly to wildlife management and environmental preservation. The funds generated from hunting licenses, tags, and related equipment purchases directly support the state’s conservation programs. Limiting the effectiveness and accessibility of hunting equipment could decrease participation, thereby reducing the financial support that maintains our beautiful landscapes and wildlife populations.

Call to Action

This bill is a wake-up call for all hunters. We need to stand together and make our voices heard loud and clear. SB25-003 isn’t just another piece of legislation; it’s a potential turning point that could redefine hunting in Colorado forever. We must push back with all we have, ensuring that our concerns and the impacts on our lives are understood and taken seriously by those in power.
